On February 25, 2023, the Wabash Valley Crew honored Sarah Scott Middle School as the first school in the state of Indiana to host the George Pocock Rowing Foundation’s Erg Ed® program. This innovative indoor rowing program uses rowing machines to introduce students to the sport. It also encourages teamwork, promotes a healthy lifestyle, and encourages goal setting. During the 2022-2023 school year, Sarah Scott Middle School students will have the opportunity to participate in the program as part of the school’s physical education curriculum.
Sarah Scott physical education teacher Nathan Gilbert accepted the award on behalf of the Scotties as part of the 2nd annual Rowing Challenge held at the Vigo County YMCA. In honoring the Sarah Scott program and its rowers, Wabash Valley Crew President Jim Owen noted: “We are very proud of Sarah Scott for leading the way not only to promote rowing in our community but also to improve areas of health, wellness, and education. Once the pilot program is complete, we hope to introduce this to all the middle schools in Vigo County with similar results.”
